Researchers Assess if Mussels can Filter Microplastics from Water

The ability of beds or rafts of mussels to filter out microplastics from water is being assessed by researchers with the UK Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The PML has received funding for a project titled “Removing Marine Microplastics with Mussel Power”. According to a May 16, 2019 PML news release, the research will explore whether the filtering power of “… native mussels can be harnessed to help remove microplastics and other types of pollution from coastal and estuarine waters …”.
