On October 6, 2020, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) is expected to “… publish a review on EU action to tackle plastic packaging waste ... The review focuses on plastic packaging waste, since it represents the single biggest part of plastic waste (61 %). Based on publicly available information and material specifically collected, the auditors highlight some of the gaps, risks, challenges and opportunities of the approach the EU has adopted to reduce plastic packaging waste and increase recycling … Plastic packaging waste is the largest single plastic waste stream and is the only one subject to a binding recycling target. The EU currently recycles only 41.9 % on average. In response to that, the EU's 2018 plastics strategy proposes measures aiming to improve recyclability, collection, sorting, recycling and recycled content of plastic products.
