According to a February 20, 2020 FMI blog https://www.fmi.org/blog/view/fmi-blog/2020/02/20/over-250-state-and-local-plastics-bills-pending-new-fmi-resource-available-to-assist because the rate of nationwide plastic waste recycling in 2017 is lower than five years ago and is projected to continue to decline, state and local efforts to address plastic waste are expected to accelerate – “… some states are seeking to … impose comprehensive regulatory frameworks for managing the disposal of all products and their packaging. Known as ‘extended producer responsibility’ (EPR) … these policies impose on producers significant responsibility – including financial responsibility – for the treatment or disposal of post-consumer products …” - To assist its members when engaging with lawmakers, FMI has released a new resource, titled “State Sustainability Resources” which provides background on the plastic waste issue and summarizes pending State and local plastic waste legislative and regulatory efforts. #Recycling #PlasticWaste #FoodPackaging #FMI
