A June 17 Japanese government news release notes that “... Environment Ministers agreed to adopt a voluntary framework … The Three Pillars of this framework are: 1) Proper Waste Management, Marine Plastic Litter Collection/Recovery, Deployment of innovative solutions, Promotion of a ‘comprehensive life-cycle approach’ … 2) They will also share related policies, best practices … [and] 3) Promote innovation and boost scientific monitoring and analytical methodologies for marine plastic litter including microplastics …”
